July 28 - The Explorers

With nothing better to do this morning, I slept in. I got up finally around 11 and got dressed so that I could show housemate Kim around campus and get her signed up for a trip that the IPO was doing. Another housemate, Mitun, joined us and we got free lunch on campus and walked around so Kim could get her bearings and then we three grabbed the 340 bus to the city. Basically we just wanted to walk around and see where things were. We didn’t do anything touristy. When we saw a store that interested us, we went in. We walked to the visitor’s center and I checked out some info for personal use, but also for my Project Development class because I think I saw something I could use for a project, but I needed to see what tourist information was available in print. When we exited a guy approached us and asked if any of us would give him our thoughts on the public transport system for his student documentary. Considering I’ll be doing something similar soon, I figured sure, why not? So I gave him my opinion on the transport system and we went on our merry way, eventually finding a place to eat and watch the city from a patio. Then we did more walking until we decided we had enough and grabbed the tram back. I took some pics of the city during the day so you can see them.

We had to visit a public toilet while we were in the city... this is what was on the stall door in front of me...

And this was behind me as I flushed. Do you find this disturbing? Apparently, it's Oz's way of keeping blood borne diseases like Hep C and HIV rates down among users. They figure, people are going to do drugs and we can't stop it, but we can stop the spread of disease. They also give out needles or sell them cheaply to stop people from sharing needles. Very odd... but I guess they see the positive in it.
