Phillip Island

I took a random weekend daytrip to Phillip Island. It’s just over an hour outside of the city and has great surf beaches, a couple small towns, and fairy penguins!

It all started out with a friend of Sahani and Udeshika’s suggesting an outing to Lakes Entrance, about 4 hours away. The plan was that the girls, Kim and I would be driven by the friend (Nuwan) to this destination in time to be there for sunrise. We had dinner at his place, watched a movie, then everyone tried to get some sleep. At 3am when the alarms started ringing, no one appeared to move but the driver and me (because I hadn’t even fallen asleep yet because I was talking online). He suggested an alternate destination to Phillip Island and that was fine by us!

We left around 10am and stopped at the visitor’s centre and then just drove around to some of the beach areas and lookouts. We stopped for fish and chips in the main town on Phillip Island and then went out to the far end of the isle (which took 20 min from the town – it’s a small island) to the blowhole walk area before heading to the fairy penguin centre. It was getting quite cool but we braved the wind and sat in the bleachers with the tons of tourists awaiting the arrival of the penguins back to their nests safe in the reserve. First there was one…then another… and then tons! They are, at a max, a foot high! Soooo cute! No pictures of them because it’s not allowed – the flashes can blind them (or so they say). So you can go here to see what I’m talking about. Otherwise, here are just a couple of the shots I took.
