Christmas in Oz

There is something wrong with warm Christmases. On the way to the Christmas eve party this was my view: a rainbow!

We celebrated as a mix of religions and cultures, but all supporting us Christians. We had a great potluck dinner, a decorated tree, Christmas music, and plenty of wine. It was a great night!

On Christmas day I opened my present from Mommy and Papa! Yay for Santa’s postal helpers! And then basically sat around doing nothing until that evening when Sahani and Udeshika (Buddhist), Mohammed (Muslim) and Gurvinder (Hindu) and I went out to see the Christmas displays in the city and have dinner. I love my friends. They are the best!

Dec 14 – 21 THAILAND

Dec 14 – We arrived in Singapore and had a few hours to kill before our flight to Bangkok, so we took a nap and checked our email. We arrived in Bangkok and got a taxi to our hotel near Chinatown. We were on the 23rd floor with an amazing view.

We took another nap before getting cleaned up and heading off to backpacker heaven – Khao San Road.

I introduced Kim to Pad Thai and then we headed in to an Irish pub (of all places) and had happy hour and listened to the local bands. We ended up making friends with the people around us and got really drunk and sang along as the place got packed with people. I know we left there and went to another place when it closed and those people kept drinking, and I ordered a pizza for Kim and me. As soon as we finished I paid and told Kim we had to go. I have no idea what time it was, how we got the taxi, but I know I brushed my teeth, changed clothes and passed out.

Dec 15 - I woke up the next day so ill that even water wouldn’t stay down. So much for getting to the bus station early. By the time we made it to the station we were told we would miss our ferry connection to Koh Chang (an island)… Kim bought our tickets while I babysat our bags and tried to stay as still as possible. She went to look for some snacks and I realized there was an earlier bus time. She returned, I showed her the other bus, we returned the tickets, bought new ones and ran to the bus. The bus service was great! They gave us drinks, snacks, and even turned on Herbie Fully Loaded (dubbed in Thai). It took us about 4 hours to get to the nearest city to KC where we jumped into the back of a truck with a bunch of other people and went to the ferry port. Our ferry arrived and we were on our way to the island – that took about an hour. We arrived on Koh Chang and jumped into another truck to get to our hotel. When we saw it, we were passing it and yelled at the driver to stop. Said goodbye to the people in the truck and made our way back down the street a bit…then stopped dead in our tracks. The hotel was under construction!! We asked the guard as we showed him our confirmation. I saw a man run across the street and walk up to Kim as I sat with the bags… he grabbed our bags and another porter came over and we walked across the way to a different hotel. Turns out there are two complexes and all was well.

We checked in to our beautiful room facing the pool, took showers, and had dinner (the food was amazing and part of our package again!). We went for a walk, but it was a bit cool out and returned early to bed since we were supposed to go snorkeling early the next morning.

Dec 16 – Snorkeling got cancelled due to the wind, so we slept in a bit more before heading out to check out the White Sand Beach area and find an internet café. Instead of our snorkeling adventure, our replacement was an elephant ride, so after lunch we caught our transfer to the elephant trek grounds and had a fun ride on Banyan with a guide that we swear was high on something.

He was so funny and just kept saying “Banyan, mother. Baaaaaby elephant. Thailand tong (tongue).” We just kept laughing and I was just flipping out that I was on an elephant’s head. I love elephants. After the ride, we played with a baby elephant and went back to the hotel so we could go check out the beach. The beach was beautiful. We watched the sun go down and then came back to have dinner where we were served amazing food again!

It was a full moon, so there was a party going on. So we walked back to the beach and had a couple drinks before landing at Tantawan, a reggae beach club with bungalows. Turns out they had a vacancy the next day right on the beach and we booked it, listened to music, drank some Thai rum, hung out with some guys from Holland and went to the Sabay Bar where the full moon party was happening. Unfortunately, a fight between to Thais broke out right next to where we were standing and that made me lose my buzz and we left pretty soon after.

Dec 17 – We woke up for last parts of our package deal – an hour of kayaking and a hike to the waterfall. The kayaking was really nice and peaceful. The hike to the waterfall was also pretty easy and worth the view.

Kim and I got back to the hotel, had lunch (our last meal *sniff sniff*) and packed our things and headed to check in at the bungalows. Gone were the soft twin beds, AC, and hot shower… but hello! Ocean 15 feet away from my door! (see pic - our door on the right!)

We made one trip and dumped some stuff and went back to get the rest of our stuff at the hotel when our favorite hotel staff guy said he’d take care of the luggage, called the hotel van, packed our stuff up and us too, and took us down the road. Kim and I went to open up the back of the van and out popped a bellhop who picked up our bags and carried our stuff in. These guys were awesome. They even checked out the place and approved. We were really sad to leave them, but the bungalows were only 700 Baht (like $20) rather than $50 at the other if we had stayed. Kim and I changed into our suits and hit the sand. We had met a Thai man the night before who had invited us out to the bungalows he owns for dinner… sounded kinda dodgy, but we met him anyhow and went out to his place on Klong Prao.

Turns out, we had kayaked right by his bungalows that morning and the place was fabulous. He made us dinner of barracuda and veggie noodles and we had beer and rum and laughed with the other people staying there. All of a sudden I felt a thud on my chest. I thought someone had thrown something at me, but when I looked down it turns out it was a baby gecko! And mommy and daddy gecko were up above us on the roof watching!

We had such a great time that we invited everyone back to hear the live music at our place and to keep on drinking rum. It was an awesome night.

Dec 18 – Ahhh, vacation. No plans. Just the sun, sand, water, and me. The electricity was out in our room and the water wasn’t working either, so I got changed into my swimsuit and sat outside until the bungalow boys woke up and asked me if I wanted to go on a liquor run with them. I jumped into the car and we drove down the road and I picked up some bottles of rum to bring back as gifts (kicking self now as I wish I had bought more!). I was poured a glass of Pastis and soda, which took some getting used to, but ended up being kinda refreshing as I sat in the sun. Yes, alcohol and sun. Am so smart, but I drank a lot of water too. I ended up babysitting a baby python owned by the tattoo artist at the bungalows and could totally have one as a pet (til it outgrows me!). He would just coil up around my hand and sit. It was sweet. (Yes, a snake is sweet and yes, this is my hand pictured.)

Dec 19 – Again, no agenda. I woke up and had breakfast of French toast and listened/watched music DVDs as I read a Sidney Sheldon book I had gotten off the lending shelf at the bungalow’s library. Siri, the guy who owned the other bungalows, came by that afternoon to invite us back out to his place that evening for a birthday party. We said sure and hung out on the beach, playing with the snake and enjoying the day til it was time to go out there. Kim and I got a taxi to the road where his bungalows were located and then walked…nearly getting lost in the dark trying to get there. We had a fantastic dinner provided by the Turkish guy Ziggy who was staying there and plenty of laughter and drinks for the birthday of a Suisse guy staying there. At the end of the night, I was getting a bit concerned on how we were going to get home. Siri finally agreed to drive us, but I think I was scared the entire drive. It seemed to take forever and I think he even fell asleep a couple times on the road. By the time we got back, I was so wound up that I got sick to my stomach. Or it could have been the food. Hard to know after all my stomach had been through on the trip.

Dec 20 – We woke up and packed our things to check out and leave behind our beach and bungalow. It was kinda sad, but we were also both looking forward to getting back to our friends in Australia. We made our way back on the truck, ferry, truck, bus, taxi and to the hotel where we had stayed the first night. We got checked in, cleaned up, and then went to Hard Rock and then out to Khao San again. We didn’t have much time to pick up anything, but I grabbed a couple shirts since everything I owned was dirty, so at least I had a clean shirt for the plane. We left around midnight and walked a good portion of the way back and took pics of the city at night. It really is peaceful in the city… I was quite surprised. Such a contrast to the road we had just been on! We decided we were lost after about 45 min walking and grabbed a rickshaw and came back to the hotel.

Dec 21 – Bye bye Bangkok. We arrived at the airport and checked in but because I have an e-visa for Australia (meaning, it’s not in my passport like a stamp) the lady refused to check me in past Singapore because she thought I would be denied entry to the country. I argued that it was fine…but in the end just said ok. We went to head through customs and got dealt another blow – a 500baht visitor tax each! Kim had saved 1000baht to buy something at the airport, but sadly (and fortunately) it went to pay the tax for us instead since I didn’t have anything left!

We got in to Singapore and called Te Wann and met him on Orchard Road to go to dinner at Clarke Quay at the brewery where Kim and I had the good nachos last time. Te Wann had gotten married on the 14th of December so we got wedding details while we drank a tower of beer and went through two plates of nachos and also talked to a nice guy from the US who was working on a ship and flying out the next day to meet it off some remote island. Te Wann had to run off to a work engagement and Kim and I had to make our way back to the airport. T called us a taxi, but it still took a while for it to arrive, plus drive time to the airport. We went back through customs and then realized that I had looked at the flight time wrong and it the gate was closing when we arrived… so we took off running and laughing all the way and made it with plenty time to spare, but still I think it shocked us. We got settled next to a nice guy who didn’t mind that we were so silly and giggly from our beers as we tried to calm down. I’m not sure either of us slept on the flight, maybe Kim did, but we arrived back in Melbourne on Dec 22 around 930am and Sahani picked us up and took us back to graduate house. Back to life in Oz.

Dec 8 – 13 MUMBAI/GOA

Dec 8 – We left Sri Lanka behind to return to India and meet Manjit in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). We arrived pretty late and it took a while to travel to Manjit’s sister’s home. We showered, packed for our trip to Goa, and went to bed.

Dec 9 – Another new experience in India… getting on to a train in Mumbai, especially when it’s second class non-AC. First, it was crowded and people were cramming on to the train to get to their seats. We found ours, put our stuff overhead, and tried to sleep. The service people come through every 3-5 minutes asking if we want chai, water bottles, ice cream, and lunch foods… so not a lot of sleep going on in there. Plus, we were sitting up and the only air coming in was from the windows outside. After about 8 hours of that we were finally in Goa and off to the hotel.

We checked in and then went to check out the place and went straight to the beach for sunset and drinks.

First impression of Goa… it’s funny to see a resort with so many Europeans in India. And the beachside bars were something out of Cancun. But the water was nice, the beach was clean, and the sunset was nice. We went back to the hotel after a bad try of a hookah that wouldn’t work well and Kim and I felt like our throats had been turned into chimneys it was so smoky and flavorless. Dinner was part of our package at the hotel and dinners were all buffet.

After dinner we headed out to a place called Club Cubano. When we arrived we found out it was bikini night, but we didn’t know, so we paid the cover charge and headed in. I’ve never been a prettier club, not that I go to many… but we had a great time and met lots of people and had a blast.

Dec 10 – We grabbed breakfast before jumping on the bus to see the churches and temples of the area. Goa was a Portuguese settlement area, so there is a mix of old Catholic churches and the Hindu temples. We saw some of each...

It was a nice tour, but we would have rather spent time on the water, so Kim and I got in a quick swim when we returned and had dinner and headed out to a bar called Tito’s. Krishna decided to come to town with some of his friends and met us there. I ended up getting very sick to my stomach, so I came home while everyone else stayed and was glad I left when I did! Nuff said!

Dec 11 – We decided to skip the tour part 2 and went to Baga beach instead to enjoy the ocean waves and sun. We spent the day there and had a nice lunch. Kim and I got stalked in the water by some guy for a while until Kim yelled at him and he took off. I’m glad she said something because we were both getting a bit freaked out. Kim and Manjit had massages on the beach and both enjoyed them. After our day in the sun, Manjit and her bro went back to the hotel to get cleaned while Kim and I walked back so we could go to the silver shop where I ended up buying a great ring for $7. I could’ve done a lot of damage at that market, but I didn’t have that much cash on me and they didn’t take Visa. We went back and got cleaned up, had dinner, went to take naps before heading back to the club, but instead slept until the next day. 12 hours! Bed at 9pm and woke up at 9am!

Dec 12 – Had some breakfast and then watched a movie with Manjit while we got packed up to hit the train again… still 2nd class non-AC. We arrived in Mumbai pretty late again and took showers and went to bed.

Dec 13 – It’s our last day in India. We got on the road with Manjit, her bro, her sis and sis’s family (husband and 3 kids), plus our luggage and a driver! It was a full car!

We saw the city from different angles – the slum lined streets and the fancy high rises. It was such a contrast, but overall, a fascinating city. We went to India Gate and then out on the water to see the city from the ocean.

We would have gone to the Elephant Caves if there had been time, but there wasn’t… next time maybe? They took us to a shopping mall and then a market to get us the last of our souvenirs. Manjit’s sister did some amazing bargaining work. It was hysterical. We just pointed and she did the work. Kim and I got ripped off a couple times on our own, but really and truly… I’m not going to bitch about $1 or $4, though I agree with Kim, it’s the principle of the thing. Still, it was fun. So our last stop was Juhu Beach where we got henna stamp tattoos (mine drew a large crowd, I wish I had the pictures of the people around me while I was getting it done).

We also bought some purses and I sat there and bargained with these kids selling them and had a laugh and we drew crowds again. The kid was tough, but fair and I got Lauren a purse for 30 Rupees and shook the boy’s hand on it which made the crowd laugh. It was pretty cute. I told him he did a good job. We had some water balls and chat at a stand and called it a night. We were dropped off at the airport and thanked Manjit for an amazing time in her country and then checked in for our flights to Singapore and on to Thailand.

Dec 2 - 8 SRI LANKA

Dec 2 – We took our first flight from Hyderabad to Chennai and arrived in Channai (formerly known as Madras) to steamy, tropical weather. Kim basically slept walked off the plane and to the international terminal where we sat for hours waiting for our flight. We arrived around 8am in Chennai and our flight to Colombo was supposed to be at 1130, but was delayed until 2pm. I called home and called Sahani to check in and tried to keep awake while Kim slept sitting up, mouth open. Pretty funny.

We finally arrived in Colombo and were met by Prasanth’s uncle. He took us to check in at a hotel in Colombo and helped us make contact with Sahani’s parents and arranged our travel to see them in Kurenagala. Kim and I got showered, took a nap, and headed out for a nice dinner at the Galle Face Hotel. It was this really nice seafood/Sri Lankan buffet and we sat along the ocean wall and watched and listened to the waves. It was so steamy out that both Kim and I took a second shower when we got back and had one of the best night’s sleep we’d had in a while.

From here… Dec 3 – 6 was spent in Sahani’s home. I’m going to list things we saw and did before returning to Colombo Dec 6-8 and then tell a bit about the emotional side of Sri Lanka…

First, Sahani’s parents were amazing. If the roads in SL had been better it would have taken about an hour or so to arrive there, instead it took nearly 4. We got our first cultural experience because Sahani’s youngest sister had just started menstruating and there is a big party to celebrate her becoming a woman. How crazy is that? So Kim and I met all the family and drank Arrack (local liquor) and ate and laughed with the family.

The family arranged a day trip for us to Sigiriya (fort on top of a mtn);

Dambulla (where Premi’s house is) to see the Golden Temple;

Kandy (could spend a day there... beautiful area);

and then back to home. It was all a blur and I didn't really take that many pics. So the views you are getting are very limited. We drove up Elephant Trunk Mountain in Kurenagala to the big Buddha with the family that night and then Udeshika’s parents came over to meet us.

Udeshika’s father took us the next day to Penivala where the elephant orphanage is and we saw a feeding and the baths. That was fun.

I even took a picture with an elephant the same age as my papa!

Then we went to a mushroom farm, the first in the country currently being developed by an ex-pat Sri Lankan who lives in Melbourne. We had been traveling that day with his son “Chuck” who also lives in Melbourne and is my age. It was nice to have someone else to chat with. After the farm, which was actually very interesting, we went to Udeshika’s father’s company and drank King Coconut milk and then scooped out the inside to eat.

After our snack we went to pick up Udeshika’s brother and then went to drop Chuck off at his family’s home. We returned to Sahani’s house pretty late and Kim and I were both tired, but ended up playing dress up with the family.

Sahani's mom gifted the sarees we are wearing to us, along with earrings and bracelets. What a generous gift!

We finally convinced the family that we would rather go back to Colombo since we had tried to get south to the beach to see both the reconstruction areas post-tsunami and also to enjoy the sun and sand… but we were apparently not convincing enough and though we did return to Colombo, it was still not exactly as we had hoped or planned, however Parakama (U’s bro) came with us and helped translate. He has his interview to get in to La Trobe that day and was accepted! YAY!! Kim and I had time to sit down and check email and tried again to get a hold of Premi – no luck despite getting his number from his father’s secretary. Kim and I checked in to a hotel and said goodbye to Udeshika’s family and grabbed dinner and crashed.

We spent our last day in Colombo walking Galle Green, Pattaya and then souvenir shopping at Odel. After our walk on the green that morning, Kim was burned to a bright pink color, so it was good that we spent the afternoon indoors. We cam back, had a shower and a nap, and then headed to Royo Bojun for Sri Lankan buffet dinner. It was really tasty. Then we headed to the Hilton for drinks before heading back to our hotel. The next day we left to meet Manjit in Mumbai.

Soooo… Sri Lanka. Pictures could not do the scenery justice. It was lush… a tropical rainforest… green and shiny mixed with dirt/gravel roads. Houses didn’t have windows - just decorative bars to let air flow - and everyone sleeps under a mosquito net at night. There is the sweetest pineapple there and the people couldn’t be friendlier.

My emotional state during this trip was just a wreck. We were invited to come to SL by Premitha and then… he never bothered to contact us once we arrived. I was so angry with him that the whole trip was a blur. Kim was pretty upset too… but not in the same way. I may, some day, return to SL and not feel sad; we were adopted by Sahani’s and Udeshika’s family (as well as the help provided by Prasanth’s uncle) and we have been invited to return any time as long as we come see them first! There is so much to see in that country that two weeks would have done us better, but I was glad to leave when we did. Turns out, from what I’ve pieced together, Premitha returned home and his parents had accepted a marriage proposal and so soon after our time there, he was to be engaged. I assume that I could not be seen with a government minister’s son in his home country if he were about to be engaged. No scandals or something. Would have been courteous of him to at least inform us of the situation, ya think?
